Northern Dalmatia – Places worth visiting and seeing online

Northern Dalmatia – Places worth visiting and seeing online

The historical region – Dalmatia - is characterized by a unique coastline created by flooding  the mountains situated near the shore. It resulted in creating an unusual landscape consisting of thousands of islands, straits and beautiful bays.

This amazing scenery combined with the Mediterranean climate attracts every year millions of tourists looking for a vacation on the beach with azure waters of the Adriatic Sea - from the largest beaches full of bustle and fun to the small ones hidden in the rocky bays of the deserted islands.

In this article I would like to present all the beautiful places which can be found in the northern part of this amazing region located in the middle part of the Croatian coastline between Pag Island and Split.

Pag Island

The island is 60 km long. It is sparsely populated and there’s no fresh water. Its landscape looks almost like the landscape of the moon or Mars. Those who have been to the Canary Islands may associate Peg Island with Fuerteventura which is just as desert. One of the most characteristic places is Beritnica beach near Metajna.

Unfortunately it only shows the city harbour. The Life on Mars trail starts on the hills visible in the distance.

The largest city on the island is called Pag, just like the island. It has less than 3000 inhabitants. The city is famous for its small but beautiful old town, brines and needle lace included on the UNESCO list.

There’s an amazing view of the city from the viewpoint on the hill located in the west side of the city.

Miasto Pag

The second largest city on the island is Novalja which is popular among young people thanks to its beaches, especially the Zrće beach which is full of clubs.

There’s a 301-meter-long bridge that leads to the Pag Island. It is placed 35 meters above sea level. It was designed so it withstands the strong gusts of wind which in this particular place reach 190 km/h or more.

Zadar

Zadar is the biggest city in the northern Dalmatia and it is inhabited by almost 70,000 people. The old town is located on a small peninsula. Its forum and the ruins which can be found in the main square date back to the Roman times. Near the ruins there is also a Church of St. Donatus and The Cathedral of St. Anastasia.

Zrmanja canyon

Near Zadar there is the Zrmanja canyon which is known from the films about the adventures of Winnetou. The beautiful, meandering Zrmanje  river which flows into the  Novigradsko More bay is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Dalmatia.

Northern Dalmatia beaches

The magnificient Velebit mountains, canyons, waterfalls in the Krka National Park and beautiful islands in the Kornati National Park are not the only things that Dalmatia has to offer. It is also a perfect destination if you’re looking for a place to rest and relax.

One of the most famous beaches are Sakarun beach on Dugi Otok island and the beaches at the Nin backwaters. If you’re heading south you should visit Soline and  Dražica beach.

Going further south you should definitely visit Murter island and its amazing beach on the Riva Podvrške peninsula.

The Croatian coastline is full of smaller and bigger beaches. Everyone will find something for themselves. It is impossible to describe them all in this short article. If you’re looking for a perfect holiday destination it’s a great idea to use Google maps and webcam portals to do that. This way you can see the place you want to go to online before the trip. It is a much better way than going through the photos which you can find on the Internet but which were taken a long time ago and do not reflect the current situation.
