On the Northern border of South Africa and Botswana lies a beautiful area known as the Groot Marico, named after the Marico River. This spectacular setting houses Tau Game Lodge situated in the Madikwe Game Reserve (the 4th largest game reserve in the country). The lodge overlooks Tau Waterhole, an oasis for animals and wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and cheetahs .

Along with these animals this area attracts over 27 species of game and is a prime spot for bird watchers. The waterhole also houses resident nile crocodiles that prey on birds and other animals. The Tau live camera gives viewers a secret window into this sanctuary and it’s robust South African ecosystem as elephants bathe, lions roar, wild dogs roam, and crocodiles prey.

This game reserve is a protected area in South Africa and is part of the national park system. This unique location, where a number of rare species occur naturally, lies in a transition zone on the edges of the Kalahari.

What is the climate like in this location?

On the edge of the Kalahari desert, Madikwe formats part of a semi-arid region where the climate can be split into the rainy season (October-April) and the dry season (May-September).

When is the best time of year to view animals?

Animal viewing is good at all times of the year and usually best during the daytime. Winter is especially exciting as most animals tend to congregate around available water sources during this time.

What is the difference between black and white rhinos?

Black rhinos have developed a pointed lip which they use to pick fruit from branches and select leaves from twigs; white rhinos have a flat, wide lip to graze on grasses.
